SURVEYORS SCORE SPONSORSHIP SUCCESS

RUGBY referees at amateur matches across Yorkshire will soon be dressed to impress thanks to a £10,000 sponsorship deal to buy new kit.

A firm of environmental specialists, headed by lifelong rugby fan Philip Wilbourn, has agreed to donate £2,000 to the YRFU Yorkshire Federation of Referees Society for the next five years. The money will pay for 180 sets of shirts, socks, shorts and holdalls to replace the well-worn kit that members have had for more than a decade.

Philip, CEO of Wilbourn Associates in Sheffield, is a former Doncaster first team player and has been refereeing games for more than 20 years. His practice is a chief sponsor of Doncaster Knights and has contributed thousands of pounds to the club»s DIRECT scheme which promotes rugby in local schools.

“The existing kits were well past their best and in serious need of a revamp,” said Philip. “We‘ve now brought them into the 21st century and the investment might also encourage new recruits to offer their services. Rugby is an excellent sport which promotes teamwork, fitness and self-discipline and amateur teams deserve as much support as possible,” he added.

The federation has 200-plus accredited referees who attend matches for teams all over the county including local sports clubs, schools and universities. It relies solely on sponsorship and, according to secretary Mike Wells, Wilbourn’s donation has made a big difference to their image.

“Philip has been one of our members for many years and is a strong supporter of the organisation and has a long association with the game. We’re extremely grateful to receive this generous donation and our referees are looking forward to wearing the smart new kit next season.”
